William J. Reese is the Carl F. Kaestle WARF and Vilas Research Professor of Educational Policy Studies and History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has served as president of the History of Education Society, vice-president of the History and Historiography Division of the American Educational Research Association, and editor of the History of Education Quarterly. His most recent book was entitled Testing Wars in the Public Schools: A Forgotten History. He recently received a grant from the Spencer Foundation to write a one-volume history of the public schools of Washington, D.C.
