James A. Banks

James A. Banks recently published with Teachers College Press a newly edited book, ""Standing Strong in Undemocratic Times: Supporting Diversity and Enhancing Democracy in Education."" In this timely volume, Banks and a stellar group of contributors push back on the national and cogent attacks on diversity and multicultural education, both of which have accelerated after the 2024 presidential election. Beyond describing the challenges that multicultural education and democracy are likely to face in the coming years, each chapter offers interventions and actions that educators and administrators can take to mitigate their impact.

Randy Bennett

Robert Floden

Robert Floden has been appointed as chair of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine ad hoc committee to conduct a consensus study on Modernizing Mathematics Education for Grades 9-14. The committee plans to release a consensus report in 2027.

Sarah Freedman

Sarah Warshauer Freedman received a 2026 Presidential Citation from the American Educational Research Association "in recognition of research contributions to the field of Language, Literacy, and Culture and her unwavering commitment to mentoring the next generation of scholarship."

Howard Gardner

Howard Gardner has two book updates to share. The first is the re-release of my 1983 publication, Frames of Mind, in which I introduced the Theory of Multiple Intelligences. The new edition came out on April 7, 2026. In addition, I am working with the publisher on a new release of Multiple Intelligences: New Horizons. Both are being re-published by Basic Books, with whom I have worked for over forty years and Harvard Project Zero-- the research entity with which I (and many others) have been associated with for a long time-- will shortly mark its 60th year.

Shaun Harper

Shaun Harper’s book, “The Big Lie About Race in America’s Schools” (Harvard Education Press), received the 2026 Society of Professors of Education Outstanding Book Award. Harper was also elected to the inaugural cohort of Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) Fellows, inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi interdisciplinary honor society, and recognized as a Los Angeles Times Top 100 Hollywood Entertainment Industry Business Leader. Teachers College Press published his 13th book, "Let's Talk About DEI: Productive Disagreements About America's Most Polarizing Topics."

Nancy Hornberger

Nancy H. Hornberger received the 2026 AERA Bilingual Education Research SIG Lifetime Achievement Award at the Los Angeles AERA meeting. In the words of the Award letter, "it is an immense honor and a testament to the dedication and passion you have contributed in bilingual education research over the years. We are profoundly inspired by your contributions to the field."

David Kaplan

David Kaplan, Hilldale Professor and Richard L. Venezky WARF Professor of Educational Psychology received a Renewed Research Stay Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, recognizing his research contributions and collaborations with German colleagues since first receiving a Humboldt Research Award in 2015. Kaplan will be spending two months at the Deutsches JungendInstitut (German Youth Institute; (https://www.dji.de/en/about-us.html) in Munich working on statistical methods for matching various data sources and to develop longitudinal methods in support of research on the quality of early childhood education and care in Germany. Kaplan will also be presenting workshops on Bayesian statistical methods and longitudinal modeling to DJI staff.

Diana Kotzin

Diana Slaughter Kotzin's academic and scholarly papers were dedicated and unveiled in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Northwestern University, 11/24/25. Prior to joining the University of Pennsylvania's faculty as the inaugural Constance E. Clayton Chair in Urban Education Diana, a native Chicagoan, was an NU faculty member for 20 years. Other papers and documents are housed at UPenn's Kislak Center for Special Collections, and at the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University in New Orleans.

In February, Sonia Nieto was inducted into the Multilingual Education Hall of Fame during the annual conference of the National Association for Bilingual Education held in Chicago.

Christine Sleeter

Christine Sleeter delivered four addresses in Chile in December 2025, for the Millennium Nucleus for Research on Anti-Racist Chilean Education (MRACE). Three addresses were in Spanish (La Trayectoria de mis Investigaciones en el Racismo y el Anti-racismo; La educación antirracista: análisis de la investigación; and Metodologías de Investigación para Contextos Etnicamente Diversos ), and one was in English (Critical Race Theory and the Whiteness of Teacher Education).

Christine Sleeter delivered a keynote address on January 22, to the Santa Barbara Office of Education institute for Ethnic Studies teachers. The title was "Teaching through Controversy."

Christine Sleeter published a chapter entitled "Curriculum for a diverse democracy" in James Banks' edited book Standing Strong in Undemocratic Times, published by Teachers College Press. In April, she also presented this chapter in an AERA symposium organized by James Banks and based on the book.

Christine Sleeter published the article "Social fiction: Leavy pioneers a genre" in The Qualitative Report, Vol. 30.
