Remembering the Lives and Careers of Seven NAEd Members

We recently learned of the very sad news that seven NAEd members have passed away: Bernard Bailyn, David Cohen, Miriam Ben-Peretz, James Greeno, Valerie Lee, Fritz Oser, and Finis Welch. We join their families and friends in grieving these incredible scholars, whose impact on the field of education research will be felt for generations to come. We have linked below their obituaries and will share information about memorial services as we learn more.

Bernard Bailyn passed away on August 7 at the age of 97. The New York TimesWashington Post, and Wall Street Journal, among many others, have published articles paying respect to his incredible life and career.

David Cohen passed away on September 23 at the age of 86. His wife Magdalene Lampert has written an obituary for her late husband that she would like to be shared with the NAEd membership.

Miriam Ben-Peretz passed away on July 15 at the age of 93. Only a brief obituary​ is available online at this time, but we will share her full obituary here once it is available.

Jim Greeno passed away September 8 at the age of 85. His obituary is available at this link.

Valerie Lee passed away September 21 at the age of 83. We will share her obituary here once it is available.

Fritz Oser passed away on September 5, at the age of 83. The International Academy of Education posted an obituary for Fritz, available at this link. The Association for Moral Education also posted a tribute to him on their website.

Finis Welch passed away on August 24 at the age of 82. You can read Finis’s obituary at this link.
