Statement in Support of the Ukrainian People

Mar 4, 2022

March 4, 2022

The National Academy of Education stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, and we express our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones and to those who have been harmed or displaced in this burgeoning conflict. We are especially saddened by the death and displacement of children in this and all other humanitarian crises worldwide. While we admire the efforts of countries who have taken in over a million refugees, we strongly encourage host nations to prioritize the needs of children and to treat all refugees with dignity and allow open access regardless of cultural or ethnic background. As an organization, we also believe that it is the democratic will of a people that should serve as the foundation of government, whose right to sovereignty and nationality are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We hope for a return to a lasting peace in Ukraine, one in which its children are free to live and learn without fear of conflict, trauma, or violence. We also call for the United States government to provide whatever support and accommodations are necessary to Ukrainian and other students and researchers currently in the U.S. and who may be unable to return to their home countries until it is safe to do so.
