Jonathan Guryan is the Lawyer Taylor Professor of Education and Social Policy, Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research and a courtesy member of the Economics Department and the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a co-founder and co-director of the Education Lab in the Urban Labs at the University of Chicago. Much of his research is in two main areas, understanding the sources and consequences of racial inequality in and out of schools, and the economics of education. In recent work, he has conducted several large-scale randomized studies to evaluate the effectiveness of promising school programs: high-dosage tutoring (an individualized, intensive math-instruction program), cognitive-behavioral therapy based group mentoring programs in high schools, and mentoring in elementary and middle schools aimed at increasing school attendance.
