Dr. Joyce E. King, (BA, Sociology (with honors); PhD, Social Foundations of Education, Stanford University) serves as the Benjamin E. Mays Endowed Chair for Urban Teaching, Learning & Leadership and Professor of Educational Policy Studies at Georgia State University. She is also affiliated with the Africana Studies Department, the Women's and Gender Studies Institute, and the Urban Studies Institute. After serving as the founding Chair of the Mills College Ethnic Studies Department and on the faculty at Stanford University, she was Director of Teacher Education at Santa Clara University for twelve years. She has held senior academic leadership positions at Medgar Evers College (CUNY) and the University of New Orleans and was Provost of Spelman College. She was a W.K. Kellogg National Fellowship and an American Council on Education Fellowship recipient, a member of California's Curriculum Commission and the National African American Reparations Commission; she is an Institute for Food and Development Policy (FoodFirst.org) board member and board member of The Marcus Garvey Institute for Human Development. Her many awards include Stanford University's Graduate School of Education Alumni Excellence in Education Award and Georgia State University's Innovation in International Education Faculty Award and the Sheth Distinguished Faculty Award for International Achievement. She founded the Guardians of Heritage International Youth Civic Leadership Collaborative. Dr. King is a past-president of the American Educational Research Association. Her widely recognized scholarship includes the landmark AERA publication, Black Education: A Transformative Research and Action Agenda for the New Century, 8 other books and more than 75 publications. Her concepts of "dysconscious racism" and "heritage knowledge" continue to influence research and practice in education and sociology in the U.S. and in other countries.
