Allan Collins is professor emeritus of education and social policy at Northwestern University. He received his BA, MA, and PhD from the University of Michigan. His research in education centers on design research, learning communities, epistemic forms and games, cognitive apprenticeship, situated learning, and systemic validity in assessment. He has received a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation fellowship and a Sloan Foundation fellowship. His publications include What's Worth Teaching, Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology (with Richard Halverson), The Cognitive Structure of Emotions (with Andrew Ortony and Gerald Clore), Readings in Cognitive Science (edited with Edward Smith), and Cognitive Apprenticeship: Teaching the Crafts of Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic (with John Seely Brown and S.E.
