Ellen Condliffe Lagemann is a Distinguished Scholar at New York University, having retired in June 2019 as the Levy Institute Research Professor at Bard College, and a Distinguished Fellow at the Bard Prison Initiative. Between 2002 and 2009, she was the Charles Warren Professor of the History of American Education at Harvard University. She is a former Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a former President of the Spencer Foundation. She has taught at New York University, where she was chair of the Department of the Humanities and the Social Sciences and Director of the Center for the Study of American Culture and Education, and at Columbia, where she was Professor of History and Education at Teachers College and a member of the Columbia Faculty of Arts and Science Department of History. Her publications include A Generation of Women: Education in the Lives of Progressive Reformers; Private Power for the Public Good: A History of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching; The Politics of Knowledge: The Carnegie Corporation, Philanthropy, and Public Policy; An Elusive Science: The Troubling History of Education Research; (with Henry Lewis), What is College For?; and Liberating Minds: The Case for College in Prison.
