Patricia A. Edwards is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University, where she has served on the faculty for more than three decades. A nationally and internationally recognized scholar, Dr. Edwards's research centers on family literacy, parent–school partnerships, equity-oriented literacy instruction, and the preparation of teachers to work effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse children and families. Dr. Edwards's scholarly career was launched during her tenure as a W. K. Kellogg Fellow, an experience that shaped her enduring commitment to community-engaged research. Her early and influential studies challenged deficit perspectives of low-income and marginalized families by documenting the rich literacy practices embedded in homes and communities. Throughout her career, she has authored and edited numerous books and peer-reviewed articles that have helped redefine family literacy as a culturally situated, relational, and justice-oriented practice. In addition to her research contributions, Dr. Edwards has provided exceptional leadership and service to the field. She has served as President of the International Literacy Association and the Literacy Research Association, and she is a member of the Reading Hall of Fame. Her work has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Oscar S. Causey Award, designation as an American Educational Research Association Fellow, and the William S. Gray Citation of Merit. Dr. Edwards's scholarship continues to influence research, policy, and practice by foregrounding literacy as a tool for educational equity, social responsibility, and democratic participation—commitments that align closely with the mission of the National Academy of Education.
