Angela Calabrese Barton is a professor in and chair of Educational Studies at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on designing and enacting equitable and socially just science and engineering teaching and learning in K-12 school and community organizations serving youth historically minoritized by dominant society. She studies how these practices and approaches support youth in leveraging science towards social transformation, with a particular focus on learning, agency, and identities. She also studies youth learning in everyday life, such as how youth navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. She is an expert in critical, participatory research and design approaches in research-practice partnerships. She is a former chemistry teacher and informal science educator, and continues to teach afterschool STEM collaboratively with youth and university students.

Calabrese Barton has authored more than 150 articles and book chapters, along with 8 books. She is a Fellow of the American Education Research Association, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She also has served as a WT Grant Distinguished Fellow, and has been a recipient of the National Science Foundation Career Award and a National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation postdoctoral fellowship. She is a former co-Editor of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching and is co-Editor of the American Educational Research Journal. Her research has won numerous awards, including the Exemplary Contributions to Practice-Engaged Research Award an American Education Research Association-wide award, the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST) Early Career Award, and the NARST Distinguished Contributions to Science Education through Research Award, among others.
